When you’re a photographer you’d think you’d draw the bulk of your inspiration from well, other photographers; however that’s not my vibe. Aside from classical art, I draw inspiration from the mundane of daily life; specifically how light moves through some objects like glass. Add water to that glass for some trippy refractions and you have magic.

That was my inspiration for this session. I wanted to go beyond that though and invoke the feeling of a mermaid out of water, longing to go back. Bright, hard light for the harshness of life on land, longingly surrounded with reminders of her aquatic life in the glasses of water and the distortions and green colour grade playing into the feelings of unease. A photo can be more than a photo- it can be a story too. And that’s exactly what Rianica and I created recently at my Middelburg studio.
